I first met Curt Cobain in the late 80's at a historic train station in his home town of Jackson, Missouri. He was down there visiting his 4 older brothers who would always take him out drinking, but the real reason for his visit was to photograph the train station. Curt rarely talked about his obsession with model trains. He would always be building a model of this city or that, and his wife Courtney Love was very good with the fine details whether it be painting or assembling trees for brush areas. He told me that quite often when he was out on stage singing his heart out, all that he could really think about was designing railroad models.
There was this cat that we used to call princess HO (but never to her face (after the popular HO gauge of trains)), she was the manager at Elite Train and Model Emporium. She could import models and construction supplies from all over the world.
One of Curt's favourite models was a large installation that he built of an African village. It was inspired partially by Courtney's ambition at the time to learn and perfect African dances.
On sunny days, we'd all sit out in the boat and write letters to train stations worldwide asking if we could purchase photos of the local tracks and buildings. Quite often, people were more helpful that you would imagine. Curt's celebrity status didn't hurt the cause either. Except, like, some people would think that we were full of crap.
